About Us

I want Japanese people to know about Turkish towels, which are a daily necessity in the West.

When you go to a resort overseas, did you know that the cute, thin beach towels that Westerners often use are actually traditional Turkish towels called peshtemals?

It has become a mainstream item on Instagram, with around 150,000 posts under the hashtag #Turkishtowel.

CottonHugg is run by a Turkish husband and his Japanese partner (wife) living in Japan, who travel to the peshtemal city of Denizli in Turkey and purchase all of their products from Denizli, then sell them in Japan under the CottonHugg brand.

We launched this in 2020 with the desire to let people in Japan know about Turkey's wonderful culture.

When we first started, due to the impact of COVID-19, it was difficult to easily visit our families in Turkey, but this sad situation only strengthened our feelings for Turkey.

The first time I, a Japanese person, encountered a peshtemal was when I visited Turkey for the first time after deciding to marry my husband. We stayed at his parents' house, and in the bathroom, we saw a peshtemal, not a bath towel. I still vividly remember the small excitement I felt at the cultural difference when my husband told me, "In Turkey, we don't use bath towels, we wipe our bodies with a peshtemal."

I brought back a few peshtemals to Japan and used them as bath blankets, lap blankets, and other things, and peshtemals have become an indispensable item in my life.

This is where the slogan "Not Just a Towel, It's a lifestyle" was born.

Eventually, we were blessed with children, and the peshtemal was a big help in all aspects of raising children. With a strong desire to let more people know about this easy-to-wash, multi-use, sustainable item, along with the wonderful culture of Turkey, we continue to work every day to spread the word about the CottonHugg brand.

CottonHugg, which goes well with the beach scene, will produce original designs with a sea theme and launch Ocean Sreies in 2023. Based in Okinawa, the brand is active as a bridge connecting Turkey and Japan, supporting beach clean-up activities, supporting Turkey-Syria earthquake relief efforts, and contributing to society in Denizli, Turkey.
